In the evening on Hanamikoji during Gion Matsuri.

Several Geiko and Maiko were gathered in front of the Ochaya Ichiriki. Usually they would already be inside with their guests. But on that night they were all waiting outside on Hanamikoji because a Mikoshi was brought through Gion famous street by the participants of the festival.

Everyone was very excited. I hardly had time to make this shot. A few seconds later I was pushed to the wall by the movement of the crowd.

Like last year, Kyouka, Sayaka and Satsuki had fun watching Gion Matsuri main procession and cheering the men pulling the hoko (Click here to view the same scene in 2010, Sayaka was still a Maiko and Satsuki not yet one).

And as every year, it was great to be there.

They are Gion "superstars" but so easy going and accessible. I am grateful to all of them for their kindness and the wonderful photo series.

Gion Matsuri is the most famous festival in Japan. It takes place every year in July in Kyoto and is crowned by a procession on July 17th called Yamaboko Junkō (山鉾巡行). This colorful parade consists of men dressed in traditional costumes pulling 32 portable shrines through some of Kyoto main streets, Shijo, Karasuma and Oike. The floats are usually called Mikoshi (神輿) throughout Japan but Hoko (鉾) in Kyoto. All floats are made of wood, assembled a few days before the parade, carry musicians and are decorated with tapestries and fabrics.

The festival is over 1100 years old and originates a series of disasters such as plagues, epidemics or earthquake in the 9th Century. The priest of Yasaka Shrine decided to lead a procession to pray and ask for a divine intervention to stop these disasters. The festival is held once a year since and remains very popular.

These are 2 of the lovely Sato-girls, Maiko from Kamishichiken. They just performed a dance and are now greeting the audience. I like this angle. You can admire the Obi perfectly tied up and the neck which is the only part of the body that is not covered by the hikizuri (kimono) or oshiroi (white make up). After a dance performance, they often sweat but no one sees it because they face the audience. Afterwards, they always use a handkerchief before it spreads to the make up. So elegant, as always.

Miyako no Nigiwai : Gokagai

"Miyako no Nigiwai" is a brilliant idea to gather all five Kagai for a joint dance performance.

The Gokagai (5 kagai, Maiko districts, literally flower street) usually organize their own performance separately. Miyako no Nigiwai is therefore a unique chance to see all of them together. It takes place every year on the 3rd week-end of June. People no longer call this event "Miyako no Nigiwai" but simply "Gokagai".

I was a bit too far to take good shots but the above picture gives a good overview of this fantastic show. This is the final dance when all Geiko and Maiko greet the audience.

As usual, it is as interesting to watch inside as outside. The show is amazing but outside it is also wonderful to see other Geiko and Maiko who come to attend the performance with their guests.

Hojyoe is a ceremony held on Tatsumi-bashi in Gion to encourage people to live in harmony with the environment (It was not allowed to take pictures of the religious ceremony).

2000 goldfish are released in the river from Tatsumi Bridge to symbolize this harmony. Maiko Makino and Masaki were the first participants to free the goldfish.

I could shoot this very close portrait series during the few minutes they spent on this tiny bridge. I especially like the one above where you can admire the perfection of the red line on her lips.

Another wonderful day in Gion. But you had to be at 2 places at the same time. One was Hojyoe at Tatsumibashi, a ceremony where Maiko Makino and Masaki released some goldfish in the river (I will post some photos later). And the other one was Maiko Kosen's Erikae, the ceremony where she became a Geiko. So I missed the beginning but I could join the crowd later on.

Congratulations to Kosen san for her erikae.

It's quite unusual but her Erikae took place on a Sunday. I felt a bit sorry for her because it was more crowded than usual and many Ochaya were closed. But anyway, she looks stunning as a Geiko and I hope she enjoyed her special day.

This is Maiko Katsune from Kamishichiken.

As you can see on the make up on her lips, she is still on her first year as a Maiko.

Pictures of her are still rare, so enjoy!

Really glad I finally got the chance to make some portraits. The above picture was shot at the Handicraft museum. She was quite nervous in one of her still rare public appearance. On the below one, she already felt better and I am of course so grateful to her for this lovely portrait.

Just a few more days to enjoy Kamogawa Odori, the spring dance performed by the Maiko and Geiko of Pontocho. It's 5:30 and 30 seconds. The show finished at 5:30pm sharp and they are already running back to their Okiya to get ready to work in the evening. They're still wearing the hikizuri (outfit) they used for the show.

Pontocho (Kyoto famous narrow street full of restaurants) is such a photogenic place. And with all of them, this is just perfect.

May sees plenty of festivals every day. These are always photogenic events. This is a portrait of a man carrying the Mikoshi at Ujigami Matsuri.

The Mikoshi is a portable shrine that is brought through every street and to every house supporting that temple. Participants receive a divine protection for another year. The Mikoshi is quite heavy and the procession last several hours, therefore all men look pretty exhausted at the end of the day. But if you live in the district or the village organizing the festival, you have to participate!

Sometimes it gets pretty dangerous with fire etc... like for this one.

Aoi Matsuri - Purification

Sweet little Mao-chan. I hope to see her again during the main procession on May 15.

Aoi Matsuri is the festival of the 2 Kamo shrines, Shimogamo and Kamigamo. It was once believed that Aoi flower (hollyhock) would protect against natural disasters. This is one of the "big three" festivals in Kyoto with Gion Matsuri and Jidai Matsuri.

The main event is a procession held on May 15 with several characters dressed in costumes from the Heian court. One of the main character, the Saio-dai is a woman who represents purity. These pictures were taken during a "purification ceremony" (saio dai misogi no gi) at Shimogamo on May 4.

A dream - Miyako Odori end ceremony

On May 1, Geiko and Oneesan from Gion kobu went to Yasaka shrine for the ceremony that ends Miyako Odori.

Yasaka shrine is so touristic that I didn't take many photos there so far. But this shrine means so much for all residents in Gion, not only during Gion Matsuri. This is the sacred place that protects them. By watching Gion-kobu Geiko and Maiko going there, as a natural step after Miyako Odori, to pray and to thank the divinity that everything went well during Miyako Odori, I looked at it differently.

So I'm now thinking about Yasaka shrine for a future post...but coming back to the ceremony:

Maiko who participated to Miyako Odori didn't attend the ceremony but just went there to greet and thank their Oneesan and teacher.

It was really like a dream. It was unbelievable to see all of them at the same time dressed up so beautifully.

On the above picture, they are looking at their dance teacher with eyes full of respect. This is so beautiful.

After the greetings, they all returned to their Okiya in Gion followed by the usual crowd of photographers.

These two are friends. Is it the Osaka connection ? Anyway, it was the first time I heard them talking to each other using Osaka-ben (Osaka dialect) instead of the usual Kyoto-ben used by the Maiko and Geiko. This was maybe their way to relax a bit after an exhausting month. Lovely!

#Nara was the former capital of Japan before it was moved to Kyoto in 794. This is also a beautiful and relaxing city full of historical treasures, less than an hour by train from Kyoto.

I took these pictures during Heijyo-kyo tenpyosai parade on April 29. This is a festival similar to Jidai Matsuri in Kyoto where the participants parade dressed in costumes from the Heijyo-kyo imperial court. This is so colorful and beautiful. All the participants were stunning and so easy going with the camera. I like their smile...and their hair style.

This is my first post of Maiko Fumino. She looks like a doll. She always seems a bit shy and distant but was in the spotlight during Miyako Odori as Hikae in the tea ceremony held by Mamehana san. She is amazing in this colorful hikizuri and seems already so grown up compared to the below pictures at Miyabikai in July 2010 and Shigyoshiki in Jan 2011.

Miyabikai is the event where Maiko from Gion Kobu go to Yasaka Shrine to pray to improve in their practice of arts. They all wear the same yukata without oshiroi (white make up).

Pontocho is decorated with posters and lanterns announcing the spring dance performance Kamogawa odori May 1 - 24. Pontocho Kaburenjo (theater) is also beautifully decorated with lanterns covering the ceiling.

I was at the Kaburenjo "by chance" (^_-) after the rehearsal to make some portraits. I am grateful to Maiko Mitsuna for this photo. She always looks great. After a busy day preparing the performance, she is heading to her Okiya to get ready for the evening. All Maiko usually don't have much time to rest but they're always friendly and nice. I really admire them.

After a busy month of April where the Maiko from Miyagawacho performed the dance of Kyo-Odori, they are now available again for other events, such as dance and Hikizuri presentation at the museum of fine arts (fureikan).

It's pretty obvious that no Maiko enjoys this presentation to a non-initiated audience. But people seems to enjoy to see them "for real". Good to see Maiko Fukukimi and Fukusuzu. Fukukimi reminds me of Ayano (kobu).

After Kamishichiken in March, Miyagawacho and Gion-Kobu in April, Pontocho Hanamachi (Maiko district) also holds its Maiko and Geiko spring dance performance in May. This is called Kamogawa Odori, literally dance of Kamo river, in reference to the Kyoto main river which is parallel to Pontocho street. The above poster is hang on every restaurant and shop of Pontocho.

So in Kyoto in May, the action is in Pontocho because all the restaurants also open their outdoor sittings from up to September. Nothing better in the warm summer than to have dinner there and to get some fresh wind from Kamo river.

To get the privilege to have a Macha (green tea) prepared by Mamehana san before attending Miyako Odori (Gion Kobu spring dance performance), I had to book my ticket 3 months in advance and almost run to sit in the first rank.

I sat there and greet her. She certainly wanted to laugh when she saw me going straight right in front of her with a happy smile on my face. You are not supposed to greet, smile or show any expression when you hold a tea ceremony. So she could not return my greetings.

Her response was actually nicer. She knew I would be so happy to get such a picture of her. So she looked at me which was her way to greet me and thank me for coming. Wonderful, Mamehana san, I am so grateful to her.

Maiko Fumino brought me the Macha Mamehana san prepared. This day could not be better.

Always a huge crowd to the path of philosophy (Tetsu gakku no michi) to enjoy the cherry blossom. No matter if you dress casual....

Or wear your nicest Kimono....

....you got to be there.....and be patient to get a nice spot on one of the bridges to take the best pictures, from the best angle etc....

And it's worth waiting because this is so beautiful. You don't want to miss it. Almost a 2km walk and it all looks like this.

All the Machiya (Kyoto typical wooden houses) in Miyagawacho are currently decorated with lanterns and cherry flowers announcing the spring dance performance.

Unfortunately, this is now forbidden to take photos during the dance so I won't post any except this one of Maiko Fukuai collecting donation for the earthquake victims. She played Shamisen today at the final dance (Miyagawa Ondo) while 7 Maiko were opening the flower stage (hana butai) : Tanewaka, Kofuku, Fukusuzu, Kimiaya, Kimichie, Fumihana and Fukuyu. So colorful, so beautiful.

The Kanzashi (hair ornament) in April is usually pink cherry flowers. We also see some like hers containing silver butterflies.

March is the start of the season of Kyoto great events and festivals. Like last year I went to Hanatouro, the temples light-up in Higashiyama. The highlight of this event are the dances performed by Maiko of the several Hanamachi (Maiko district) in Yasaka shrine. It started with the Hanamachi of Gion-kobu and Pontocho. Next week-end will be the 3 other hanamachi Miyagawacho, Kamishichiken and Gion-Higashi.

How wonderful to see Ayano san from Pontocho again. She became such a great dancer. I enjoyed watching her and taking pictures with a 200mm lens. I am so glad about the results of these shots.

First of all, thanks for all the messages I received after the earthquake yesterday. My family and myself are all safe.

I could finally post some pictures of Ichiraku san Erikae. Look at all the detail of her outfit, she is stunning. Unfortunately, I couldn't go there so we have to thank my wife for these nice pictures. Pontocho is my favorite place for Maiko pictures because this is not as crowded as Gion and the lighting is much nicer with the natural shadow of this narrow street.

It was raining today in Kyoto but it was a beautiful day for Sayaka san and Satsuki san. And a great event for their Okiya.

It was Sayaka san's erikae the day she became a Geiko. And it was Satsuki san's misedashi the day she made her debut as a Maiko.

Congratulations and good luck to both of them.

The 41th Kyoto Traditional Entertainment Festival took place on Feb 27 at Kyoto Kaikan. Several groups performed songs, music and dance of the several festivals held every year in Kyoto. "Pictures not allowed" as usual but I couldn't help it when I saw Maiko Mameyuri. Sumimasen ne.

And I also enjoyed watching these children performing yaseshamenchi odori (Akimoto temple dance). This festival takes place in Yase every year since 1707.

Another spot of Sayaka #photo series was the Tea House of Chion-In garden. It was only with natural light therefore a bit dark but it gave a special character to the scene. I like her expression. She will look great as a Geiko.

I almost missed the below scene. I was busy taking pictures of Mamechiho. I arrived at the end and could only shoot the below one. Onihide was sitting right on the left side and did this fabulous shot.

There was such a crowd of photographers around this child that no one paid attention to these three women nearby all dressed up in blue and carrying blue wagasa. This is why they looked so surprised and addressed me this lovely smile when I asked for a picture.

At that time, I knew this would be the last time I would see Mamechiho. But I didn't know that this would be the last chance to take pictures of Sayaka and Katsuyuki as Maiko.

Sayaka became the new muse of ihee (handicraft shop) just after Mamehana became a Geiko. I thought I could see her in ihee a few times like I did with Mamehana. But she only did Ihee winter postcard series and now will become a Geiko.

Archery contest at Sanjusangendo

As every year, on Jan 16 an archery contest took place at Sanjusangendo temple (Temple Webpage in Japanese). 2000 contestants came from all over Japan wearing their nicest suits. 20 year-old women could also wear their furisode (kimono) from seijin-shiki on this occasion (see below photos).

Most of the participants were eliminated after shooting only 2 arrows. And that's the beauty of it : what matters about the contest was not the contest itself but just to be there, to gather with friends and to wear these colorful kimono.

It was really cold and the young archer on the top picture was shaking before shooting. So he missed the target. His suit was really photogenic but surely not appropriate for such weather. I didn't like this spot to take pictures at first because of the back light but finally the snow made it quite nice.

What a great evening at Ebisu Shrine.

After Satono, Satomi and Tanewaka, I could see Geiko Momiyuki and Maiko Chizu reading Omikuji.
(Omikuji : Fortunes written on strips of paper that are taken randomly from a box at the shrines).

And it seems like good news for Geiko Momiyuki. She obviously picked up the right Omikuji.

Kinkaku-ji the Golden pavillon of Rokuon-ji temple is beautiful at every season. Snow usually makes it even more popular. This is such a "Kyoto cliche", always crowded, but you never get enough.

Kyoto is getting a low of snow this year. I went there for the gate opening before the crowd, NHK etc... It was snowing like on the above picture. Then, 10min later the weather and the colors changed completely as reflected on the below shots.

Among all the new year festivities, Ebisu is one of my favorite. People go to Ebisu Shrine to pray for prosperity and success in business. It's about money so everyone is a bit more excited than usual and the atmosphere is great. I went there also to see Maiko Satomi and Satono from Miyagawacho who were distributing sasa (bamboo leaves) to shop holders for good fortune.

But but but, who did I see at Ebisu Shrine praying (for good fortune?) with a lovely shibori...Tanewaka san. What a great surprise!

She left right after her vows but gave me some time for another lovely portrait. So, good fortune was at least for me.

Then, I keep Satomi, Satono and other unexpected visitors for the next post.

On Jan 9 it was the turn of the hanamachi (Maiko district) of Kamishichiken to hold their shigyoushiki. Events in Kamishichiken are always less crowded than for the other Hanamachi so the atmosphere is more relaxed.

The Sato girls on the above pictures. Their misedashi took place in 2010 so this is still first year as Maiko (read about Misedashi).

Thanks to my 3-year-old boy we could get the attention (and smile!) of Umeraku and Umeyae on their way to the ceremony. Last year he also helped me to get this lovely shot. Maybe I should take him with me more often.

Shigyoshiki is literally the ceremony that celebrates the start of a new school year. In Japan this takes place in April for every school. But for Geiko and Maiko, this ceremony takes place in January. They all wear a formal black kimono for this occasion.

Kaomise Soken was the first public appearance of Mamehana san after her erikae. I was hoping to see her and to get a good shot. How great to finally get this shot of Mamehana, Mamechiho and Mamesome crossing shijo-dori. With such a crowd waiting for them, I didn't think I could get such a good one.

Jidai Matsuri is certainly the most photogenic festival in Kyoto : 2000 participants wearing historical costumes in the perfect location, the Imperial Park. I took hundreds of great portraits thanks to the wonderful participants, including Maiko and Geiko. This is Geiko Kouyo dressed in Madame Fujiwara Tamie (wearing a headdress called Uchi Katsugi). This is one of my favorite portrait because it has something dramatic with the Uchikatsugi hiding part of her face and her looking at the camera but at the same time she seems to be absent.

On the below picture, you can see how the headdress looks like.

September was the last performance of Maiko Tanewaka at Kokusai Hotel. Over the summer, Maiko from Miyagawacho performed dances every week-end as an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the hotel. It's very near my home and I could attend almost every performances. Tanewaka san was surprised to see me every time and finally step by step got used to this unusual face. I am so grateful to her for her patience and kindness. The last session was wonderful. Almost nobody went there (apart from her fans!) and we could talk and laugh while taking pictures.

How far would you go for your religion and belief ?

I shot these dramatic scenes during Horanya Himatsuri -Horanya Fire festival- in the peaceful little village of Kashihara near Nara. This 300-year-old festival is held every year to pray for good harvest and prosperity. To this end, the participants (every men of the village) light several torches (diameter 1.5m, 500 kg) that they carry around a shrine until it burns completely.

Gion Matsuri is the most famous festival in Japan. It takes place every year in July in Kyoto and is crowned by a procession on July 17 called Yamaboko Junkō (山鉾巡行). Instead of posting pictures of the floats (portable shrine), I selected these pictures of Maiko Kyouka and Sayaka attending the procession. They were so beautifully dressed up to watch and encourage the men carrying the floats. Kyouka is not only pretty but she seems to be always joking. They were laughing after Kyouka said to Sayaka (pointing at a man on a float): Don't you think the guy over there look like Robert de Niro ? (he obviously didn't).

I spent the summer going to one festival to another. There are so many in Kyoto and the Kansai. People are always so enthusiastic. It's often about a portable shrine (Mikoshi) that needs to be carried out all day by men through different parts of the city. These scenes are always so impressive and photogenic.

These pictures were taken on May 4th during Ujigami Festival, Otoyo Shrine (Higashiyama).

About Otoyo Shrine 大豊神社

Otoyo-jinja Shrine is dedicated to the local divinities who give protection to the district covering Shishigatani and Nanzen-ji Temple. According to tradition the shrine was founded in 887 to beseech the gods for a cure for illness suffered by Emperor Uda. It was built on Shishigatani the 15th peak of the 36 peaks in the Higashiyama range in east Kyoto. In 1954 Kyoto City listed the shrine as a Place of Scenic Beauty among the ancient temples and shrines gracing the city.

March highlight was Higashiyama Hanatouro. During this event the major temples of Higashiyama could be visited at night and Maiko performed various dances at Yasaka Jinja. 2010 started with Seijin Shiki. This is a ceremony held on Jan 11 by the city office or city hall to congratulate those who turned 20 and officially became adults. Many women celebrate that day by wearing a colorful kimono with long sleeves called furisode.

The rain didn't discourage the crowd from waiting for the "ninben sisters" during Koto-hajime. During this event Geiko and Maiko visit their teachers of traditional arts to express their gratitude for the past year and best wishes for the year to come. So glad to see Mamehana and Mamechiho again. Who wouldn't? I used a 50mm lens. It was difficult to get a good shot with the rain and I wish I could have seen Mamehana san black kimono that can be partially seen on these pictures. But finally all the wagasa made it such a beautiful scene.

This is it. The final picture on the stair of Chion-In temple was just taken. The photo session is already over. Of course, it went too fast. I enjoyed it so much. Our 5 stars are on the way to have their break. They deserve it. I like these pictures even more than the session itself because they are more spontaneous. They seem to forget the crowd, just talk and laugh as usual. And this is my last picture of Geiko Mamechiho.

Geiko Mamechiho was one of the model of the photo session organized by the famous and inspiring Maiko photographer Hiroshi Mizubuchi in Chion-In temple last Nov. 4 Maiko participated as well : Kyouka, Sayaka, Ayano and Katsuyuki. They were all great (I will post some pictures of them later) but Mamechiho was definitely the best, acting so naturally. Did Maiko Mameyuri just see her favorite actor ?

Kaomise Soken is the main theater event in Kyoto in December gathering a huge number of famous actors. Maiko and Geiko go to attend the performance and to get the name of their favorite actors to hang on their kanzashi. Here are a few photos of Maiko from Gion kobu going to the performance.

Several events take place at Kitano tenmangu to celebrate the Momiji season. The highlight is Iwai-mai, dances performed by Maiko of Kamishichiken, this year Maiko Umehisa, Umeyae and Ichimomo. If only they could have started one hour earlier. The scenery was perfect, red bridge, momiji and other colorful autumn leaves on the background. It was a bit too dark to take good pictures when it started at 05:00pm but anyway I won't complain, I enjoyed it a lot right in front of them.

Shichi-go-san, literally Seven, five and three is a ceremony held by the parents to celebrate the growth of their children at the age of 3, 5 and 7, the lucky numbers! The ceremony is normally held on Nov 15, but throughout November families go to the shrines for the ceremony wearing kimono. These portraits were shot as Kamigamo Jinja (shrine) in Northern Kyoto which is popular for these family celebrations and busy in November with Shichigosan, weddings etc...

Not sure the children understand the point of Shichigosan but at least they know that after the ceremony and exhausting photo session, they get a nice bag full of sweets and presents like for these 2 girls on the below photo.

OK, a temple light-up when tripods are not allowed is kind of frustrating. But still, I went there because I like Kodaiji and I share the enthusiasm of the Japanese for the Momiji season (maple red leaves). I have tried somehow to get something from this scene, I am not 100% satisfied with these shots but there are not that bad.

I was focusing on my camera settings when I suddenly heard in the crowd the voice of a Maiko. They are also enthusiastic but the way they speak is very particular so I could distinguish her voice.

I turned around and saw Maiko Chizu with a guest. He was also having a hard time trying to take a picture of her in the dark etc...When he went to buy the tickets I asked for her permission to make a portrait calling her by her name. She was of course very surprised that I would know her name. The guest came back and they both asked me questions and laughed that I would recognize her. How great! Then, I didn't bother them any longer. View the portrait below in this post.
